Trevor Smith: Appeals Chair

In 1991 I was asked to attend a function at the casino for a few drinks, and one can never resist such an offer, what a “CON”. Following that we established the steering committee to raise the NT Region of Variety Australia, being the last of the states and territory to be established.

The aim was to have the NT participate in the National Bash “Heart to Heart”, in 1992, and for all states and territories to finish at “ULURU”, Ayres Rock. It was at the time of Paul Keating’s recession that Australia had to have. Many sceptics said it wouldn’t work so a few of us said we’ll go even if we only have one car. Self appointed as it may have been, I became the inaugural “Bash Chairman”. Now you need to watch the Video to see the result but 8 Bash Cars supported by 12 official vehicles, mainly Army, raised $65,000. Go watch the video!

Subsequently I have been involved ever since as almost any position on the committee. I was even National Chairman for half a day due to hic-up with the constitution. (Or did they just want to get rid of me). I am currently the Public Officer for NT.

During this time we also started the National Children’s camp at Goanna Park and have been there every year since (now 9 I think?). And there have been many other extremely enjoyable Bashes, functions, I have also played Father Christmas (a little on the lean side) and so it goes on.

My wife, Helen and I c/w family of three girls came to Darwin 1979 for working holiday, but I’m such a slow worker………we now have 5 grand children and all in many ways have worked to assist Variety NT. I work for the ARMY to manage Army Cadets in the NT, strangely after many years my career has taken me back to where I started, The Army. (hey you haven’t seen any enemy here lately have you!)
